In 2009, the Humboldt & District of Commerce started the Festival of Lights in the Humboldt Campground as an alternative to having a winter parade. This event allows businesses and organizations to send Christmas Greetings to the community for several months and allows the residents of our region to enjoy a beautiful Christmas display over and over again during the season. This year?s event will run from November 24th until January 8th.
The Festival of Lights is 100% sponsored by business and organizations. Sites are decorated by individual businesses and organizations using their own employee time and imaginations. There is no admission, but rather a Silver Collection box, in which all proceeds over and above costs go to charity. Charities of choice in the past have included the Humboldt District Hospital Foundation, the JCI Spray Park Project and the Kinette?s Christmas Cheer fund. This year?s charity is Big Brothers Big Sisters, specifically their Game-on Program which is designed for boys aged 11-14.
The program provides a positive and supportive environment to discuss current and pressing issues facing boys and young men. There is a focus on physical activities, balanced eating and positive self-image, and the challenges that accompany those topics. The program is delivered for 7 weeks in 75-minute sessions. Healthy snacks and activities would be provided while volunteer mentors provide valuable information and discussion topics from the Game On manual.
